Success Story: Turnkey Hibiscus (Zobo) Herbal Tea Production Line in Lagos, Nigeria

A beverage entrepreneur in Lagos, Nigeria partnered with us to industrialize the country’s beloved hibiscus drink — known locally as zobo — with a complete herbal tea production line. The goal was to turn a popular street beverage into a hygienic, shelf-stable bottled product that could compete on supermarket shelves across West Africa.

Project Background

Hibiscus (roselle) drinks are hugely popular across Africa but are largely produced informally, with inconsistent quality and very short shelf life. Our client saw an opportunity to bottle a standardized, safe and attractively packaged zobo for modern retail. The main engineering challenges were extracting deep color and flavor from dried hibiscus calyces, controlling sweetness and acidity for a consistent taste, and achieving months of ambient shelf life in a hot climate.

Designing the Turnkey Line

Our engineers built a complete process tailored to botanical extraction and tropical distribution:

  • Controlled hot-water extraction of dried hibiscus and spices to maximize color and flavor yield
  • Coarse and fine filtration to produce a clear, bright infusion
  • Dedicated syrup room for dissolving sugar and correcting acidity to a fixed recipe
  • Blending and standardization for batch-to-batch consistency
  • Pasteurization and hot filling (or UHT) for ambient shelf stability
  • Automatic labeling, date coding and shrink packing for retail-ready output

Turning Tradition into a Scalable Product

The heart of the project was reproducing the authentic zobo taste at industrial scale. By standardizing extraction time, temperature and recipe dosing, the line delivers the same rich ruby color and balanced tart-sweet profile in every bottle — something informal producers struggle to guarantee. Hygienic closed processing also eliminates the contamination risk of open-pot brewing.

Built for West African Distribution

Ambient shelf life was essential. Proper pasteurization combined with hygienic filling lets the product travel across Nigeria and neighboring markets without refrigeration. Modular capacity means the client can scale up as the brand grows, and the same platform can produce other botanical and herbal infusions to widen the range.

Results Delivered

Following installation, commissioning and hands-on operator training, the client launched a consistent, professionally packaged hibiscus beverage that stands out against informal competitors. The standardized quality and modern packaging opened doors to supermarket and distributor channels previously closed to street-made zobo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the line make other herbal drinks? Yes — ginger, tamarind, lemongrass and other botanical infusions run on the same platform with recipe changes.

Does the product need refrigeration? No. Pasteurization/UHT plus hygienic filling provide ambient shelf life for hot-climate distribution.

How is consistent color achieved? Standardized extraction parameters and blending lock in a repeatable color and flavor profile.
