Classification of Plant Protein Raw Materials by Production Process
Process-oriented Classification for Beverage Production Lines
Different plant raw materials differ greatly in oil, starch, tannin and anti-nutritional substances, which directly determine pre-treatment, grinding, homogenization and stabilization processes. We divide raw materials into four categories based on processing difficulties and matching equipment solutions, to match customized production lines for various plant protein drinks.

High-Oil Hard-to-Homogenize Type
High oil content leads to easy separation of oil and water after grinding, so supporting high-pressure homogenizers, deoiling equipment and emulsification blending systems are required. Oil tends to float and cause layering; roasting, fine grinding, secondary homogenization and emulsification blending systems are equipped to maintain stable liquid system.
Raw materials: Walnut, almond, peanut, coconut meat, macadamia nut, etc.

High-Starch Sediment-Prone Type
Rich in starch substances, prone to sedimentation and tank sticking at low temperature, gelatinization and enzymatic liquefaction processes are essential. Starch will agglomerate and sink after cooling; starch hydrolysis, high-temperature blending and sterilization procedures are matched to reduce bottom sediment.
Raw materials: Soybean, oat, brown rice, millet, quinoa, etc.

Plant protein beverages, represented by soymilk, coconut milk, almond drink and walnut milk, feature rich plant protein, natural nutrients and smooth taste, enjoying growing demand in the global healthy beverage market. Zhonglian Machinery supplies fully automatic plant protein beverage production lines integrating water treatment, pulping, blending, homogenization, sterilization, filling and packaging. With mature deodorization and homogenization technology and stable dual sterilization process, the lines are compatible with multiple packaging formats and cover capacities from small-batch to large-scale manufacturing, widely applied in mass production of various plant protein drinks.
The six core processes
- Raw Water Treatment Raw water undergoes multi-stage filtration, reverse osmosis and UV sterilization to produce high-purity water, avoiding impurities that affect beverage emulsion stability and flavor.
- Raw Material Pulping & Filtration Raw nuts and beans go through soaking, dehulling, fine grinding and slurry-residue separation to extract fine protein slurry with full retention of nutrients.
- Blending & Homogenization Mix protein slurry with sugar, additives and pure water per formula, then process vacuum deodorization and two-stage high-pressure homogenization for smooth and stable texture.
- UHT Instant Sterilization Ultra-high temperature tubular sterilization eliminates all bacteria and spores in seconds, maximally preserving protein activity and original flavor of raw materials.
- Filling & Secondary Sterilization Complete automatic filling and sealing in enclosed environment, then send to retort for secondary sterilization to greatly extend product shelf life.
- End-of-Line Packaging Defect removal via light inspection, air drying, date coding, labeling, film wrapping, case packing and palletizing to finish finished product packaging.

Main Equipment & Performance Features
The entire production line is mainly made of food-grade 304/316 stainless steel, with corrosion resistance, no sanitary dead corners and easy cleaning. Core electrical and pneumatic components are sourced from internationally renowned brands. Equipped with a PLC control system and touchscreen operation interface, it achieves a high degree of automation. It is also fitted with comprehensive safety devices including overload protection, automatic stop upon bottle jamming and cap shortage detection for safe and stable equipment operation.

It consists of quartz sand filters, activated carbon filters, sodium ion filters, precision filters, primary reverse osmosis units, UV sterilizers and aseptic water storage tanks. The system stably produces high-purity water meeting plant protein beverage production standards, effectively prevents protein denaturation and extends the service life of the whole line.

It consists of stainless steel soaking tanks, colloid mills, slurry-residue separators and fine filters. The system completes raw material soaking, dehulling, multi-stage grinding and impurity filtration, and delivers fine, uniform protein slurry for the subsequent blending process with full nutrient retention.

It consists of automatic blending tanks, duplex filters, vacuum deaerators and high-pressure homogenizers. It completes formula batching, vacuum deodorization and two-stage homogenization, ensuring smooth taste and stable emulsion state of the beverage without long-term stratification.

It consists of tubular ultra-high temperature sterilizers, plate heat exchangers and aseptic storage tanks. It achieves instant sterilization of material liquid with high heat efficiency and precise temperature control, maximally retains protein activity and raw material flavor, and provides qualified sterile liquid for the filling process.

It includes fully automatic / semi-automatic bottle blowers, bottle unscramblers and bottle rinsing & spraying equipment. It realizes integrated container forming, sorting and cleaning, and is compatible with various bottle shapes and packaging specifications.

The full range of plant protein beverage filling equipment from Zhonglian Machinery is compatible with various packages such as PET bottles, glass bottles, cans and Tetra Pak cartons. The whole line capacity can be customized according to customers’ actual production demands.


It includes light inspection equipment, bottle air dryers, inkjet / laser coders, sleeve labeling machines, fully automatic shrink wrappers and case packers. The fully automatic workflow ensures neat packaging and clear product identification for finished plant protein beverages.

It performs full cleaning for all pipelines, tanks and equipment of the production line without disassembly, with automatic dosing and cycle control. It strictly meets the sanitary standards of the food industry and maintains long-term hygienic production conditions.

It includes air conveyors for empty bottles and product conveyors for semi-finished & finished products, covering transfer between all production sections. It realizes seamless and stable material delivery between processes and improves the overall operating efficiency of the line.
